Tammy Walker fills the role of Sales Counselor for The Gardens, and then some. Well, maybe more than some! Canton, Ohio, was Tammy’s birthplace, and soon after she was born, because of her father’s job, the family moved to Weirton, West Virginia. She grew up there, found her husband, and moved to Martinsburg, WV. That was 21 years ago. They became a family, with a son. He is grown up and is the father of a two-year-old. Their daughter completed their family and is mother to her own two-year-old. To see Tammy, one wouldn’t think that she is a grandmother!
Tammy successfully filled many roles in her career. She was a travel agent before her daughter and son came along. She worked part-time in a hospital as pre-op and post-op receptionist. Tammy became an assistant teacher for children with special needs. Volunteer work was a great joy for her. For the “Backpack Program,” she packed food for children on holidays, weekends and during summer months. Mentoring young minds from pre-K through High School was fulfilling as Tammy gave them someone to talk with, to trust. For a while, she was an Administrator-in-Training for retirement living, an experience that enhances every workday. Married life left her, so she became a divorcee, and now, she is girlfriend to a special gentleman.
Another role? Bungee jumper! This opportunity came about through friends who once lived in her neighborhood, then moved to Pigeon Forge Tennessee. She visited them and had a once-in-her-lifetime jump. The view, as she was lifted up, was incredible-of the Smoky Mountains. All too soon, she was on her way down to earth…
“You sell with your heart.” Tammy offered this comment, which was said to her more than once. Truly, she does have the heart required for her special role at The Gardens. She commutes almost two hours each way, each day. She is on call during the evenings and weekends, because family issues don’t have a regular schedule. Tammy meets with families and talks at length with them to understand their needs and direction.
Often, family dynamics change for this new phase, so Tammy applies herself to earning their trust. “I tell families their Loved One will need special attention before, during and after move-in.” Going over the many details about Assisted Living is utmost. She answers calls, greets families, gives tours, and on move-in day, makes sure that they have everything needed. “My role is much more than sales. I provide a service.”
Tammy’s favorite part of her day is interacting with families. At the end of every day, she feels she’s brought some peace to them. This is where her big heart is so important. “I work to help them transition from being caregivers back to being the son, daughter, or other relative.” Tammy feels that being in her position has brought a higher level of compassion, patience, and empathy to her personal life. In filling the many roles she’s had, Tammy welcomes each day she works at The Gardens.
